Godzilla, so it’s going to be a fight or two between giants, with not much inbetween?

That’s how its seen by many people, you’re not watching/reading Godzilla for the plot, you want it for the fights, certainly if you’re watching the American versions, there’s little else in there, you don’t root for the humans, they’re just there to provide the backdrop.

Well, if that’s the sort of Godzilla you’re after, you can avoid this, there’s altogether too much plot in here.

It starts with Bob Jones, who’s leading a research project into the various different Kaiju, when he’s brought into contact with Dr Kyoto, who tells him that there’s a race of creatures called the Xiliens, shapeshifters who have taken over various parts of humanities infrastructure and who are now moving humanity towards the apocalypse.  In addition to that, the Kaiju are now starting to fight each other, and some of them are being directed by the Xilien, and it’s all part of a plot that goes back to Ben Franklin, Inventor, President, (I kid you not) Kite Flyer…

This book has just the right edge of over the top action to serious intrigue, it doesn’t take itself as seriously as it could, but it doesn’t miss out on monsters punching each other.  We’ve got the classics like Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, but then you get Mechagodzilla, Mecha King Ghidorah, and FrankenGhidorah, and the link between the Kaiju and the monsters of old like Grendel. Running parallel is the alien invasion and the setup between many different factions all vying for control of the earth, handled with nuance and it keeps you guessing.

Overall it’s a good read, I look forwards to the next one.

Thanks to Penguin Random House and the Author for the Free ARC, my views are my own, no incentive offered or accepted.
